MII for Batch Manufacturing (SDN Template)
|
VN:F [1.9.22_1171] Rating: 2.5/5 (2 votes cast) |
Since January 27th 2010 there is a new template on the SDN called Batch Manufacturing with SAP MII:
The batch manucfacturing templates extend the SAP MII architecture by providing prebuilt, plant and role-specific composites to support manufacturing preparation, execution, documentation and reporting. Batch manufacturing with SAP MII delivers preconfigured templates for 9 application areas – role-specific manufacturing operations cockpits, manufacturing order list, material identification, work instructions, quality control, production confirmation, shift book (for shift set-up, management and reporting), monitoring and logging, as well as manufacturing performance (KPIs and production report).

I recently found the question on the Google+ forum about how to find Standard XSteps which match a certain condition. In that particular case all XSteps need to be found which have an input field with validation and the ‚Never accept‘ error handling.

What happens with the session videos?
|
VN:F [1.9.22_1171] Rating: 0.0/5 (0 votes cast) |
One last thing to mention with regard to the videos in this blog:
I converted all sessions from the original flash format to mp4 and uploaded them to Youtube. You see the Youtube video embedded in the session posts. However, in some of the sessions the conversion did not go smoothly (audio and video not well aligned). If you find such a video you are more than welcome to try to make a better conversion based on the original flash recording and send it to me for replacement in my youtube channel. You find the links to those original recordings below the youtube video embedded in the posts.
I cannot say how long those flash recordings will stay alive though…

FAQ: Conversion/migration of process instructions to XSteps
|
VN:F [1.9.22_1171] Rating: 0.0/5 (0 votes cast) |
Question: Is it possible to convert existing process instructions for PI Sheets to XSteps?
Answer: No
XSteps are master data and process instructions are maintained in customizing. There is no process or report which automatically creates XSteps in the repository. You could try to manually copy the process instructions in customizing and paste them in the process instruction tab of an Step element. It might work – or not. And there would be a good deal of rework because XSteps handle a lot of data transfer with parameters and process instructions use variables which work differently.
I generally recommend to use this as an opportunity to do a general rework of your manufacturing instructions and gradually move them to XSteps. It is possible to make the switch from one master recipe to another so there is no need for a big bang to convert everything at the same time.

Future of the Web Sessions
|
VN:F [1.9.22_1171] Rating: 0.0/5 (0 votes cast) |
Last time on September 12th there was no one coming online and therefore there is no recording available. Uwe had prepared something interesting on custom development enhancements which would enable XSteps also for Reference Operation Sets and Maintenance orders. I will put this topic now explicitly on the agenda for the next session and hope that we get some live guests.
However I wonder whether there is still the demand for these online sessions. Maybe a simple recording every now and then with no online guests would be the better model? I created a new poll here and also put it on the side panel. Please tell me what you think. Also comments to this post are welcome!

Some thoughts on using custom code in PI Sheets
In this session I had only one participant so I decided not to bother recording. In the end it was a nice discussion on the ongoing project in his company. Since the discussion covered a good deal of internal politics I won’t disclose any names here. But I would like to make a general remark on this.
Many companies – especially in a regulated environment – are very strict on creating a lot of custom coding. Of course it all adds up to the load of validation (specifications, testing,…). However in the case of PI Sheets this can lead to a lot of restrictions and complex workarounds. If you build the right function modules in a clever way you can make PI Sheets very powerful. Also the symbols and generation scopes in XSteps which require BAdI implementations add a lot of flexibility. The PI Sheet and XStep technology is really meant to be used together with some own coding. Of course you need to find a reasonable mix between using only standard and custom code.
So, hopefully we have some more participants next time 🙂

Uwe and I presented some demos of the new Plant Connectivity Release 2.2. Especially the second half was pretty technical with a lot of coding. There were almost no questions at the end but if you have any more questions on this we might do a follow up session next time.

As you know I have moved to a different area in the SAP organization. Nevertheless I want to keep this blog interesting for the XSteps and PI Sheet community.
Therefore I ask all of you whether you would be willing to contribute articles to this blog. If you are interested please send me a mail to arne.manthey@sap.com. I will then promote your user to a Contributor role which would allow you to create your own posts. Any new post from a contributor will go through a review process by myself though.
